In My Kitchen JUNE 2016

I’m not the sort of girl that likes the cold weather – if I was a bear, you probably wouldn’t see me all winter, I’d be in my bedroom, covered with doonas and blankets hibernating until Spring! But what I absolutely love about winter is all the tummy warming, slow cooked and stewed foods that I love cooking. They always bring a smile to my family’s face. This month I’ve been experimenting with new flavour combinations, as well as perfecting the traditional flavours for my mini pies and pasties, which will be coming your way in the coming weeks.

These amazing 2 dozen long stem red roses (above) were my 4 year Wedding Anniversary gift last month (12th) from my wonderful husband. They simply brought the biggest smile to my day and week. Looking at them again now brightens up an otherwise gloomy day outside.

. . . is my latest prop collection – salt and pepper shakers. The pineapples came from Target, the plain white and colourful shakers came from Harris Scarfe and the white with blue base came from a shop in Mordialloc called Red Cargo. All of them were under $5 a set – bargains!

. . . are scallop shells. Our friends from Newcastle came for a weekend last month so I tried a Jacques Reymond’s baked scallop recipe – I must make them again as it was a flavour party in your mouth! Always keep your scallop shells for later use as they cost $$!

. . . are these magnetic spice storage containers. I picked them up from an op-shop in Geelong for $5. They’ll come in handy to hold lots of condiments, instead of using my small porcelain bowls all the time.

. . . are some more props – I found these coloured plastic baskets, condiment bottles and chip packets at BigW for $2 each! Perfect for not just hotdogs but maybe fish & chips, quesadillas, nachos, fish tacos – the use is endless! What would you use them to show off?

. . . are some beautiful champagne saucers I found at an op-shop in Moorabbin for $6 the set. I have been searching for these forever, well it seems like a long time. I was looking for champagne saucers that weren’t too small as I didn’t want to have a sip of champagne and then have to refill! These are the perfect size 😉

. . . cupboard is Kojiro (in case you’re wondering, his name is pronounced Koh-jeer-oh) That’s what I get for leaving the saucepan cupboard open for that extra 30 seconds! I think he thought it was a good hiding spot.

. . . are some small milk bottles, more props. These were also from BigW for $2

And the last item In My Kitchen this month . . .

IMK June2016 #9 @MissFoodFairy

. . . is this gorgeous little patterned bread plate my sister bought for me from my nanna’s next door neighbour who was moving out of her flat. I haven’t used it yet but I’ll find something that it will work perfectly with.

    • Thanks Nancy, those champagne saucers were a steal and they still had the stickers on each glass – never even used!! I will have to share with you some Krosno & Bohemian crystal glasses I found one day walking home, but that’s another #IMK post Nancy. Thanks for coming by for #IMK xx

  4. Lovely goodies in the kitchen this month. Each time I see an IMK’er finding wonderful goods in their local opshop I always think I really should go for a wander into mine but I never get around to it!

    • Someone’s trash is another persons treasure. Something old is something new again. Op-shops or thrift shops are worth a look in – some are way too expensive for the items they get for free but I just say they weren’t meant to be mine 🙂 I love a good op shop especially when bargains are found! Take the plunge Josephine, you’ll be amazed at what you find! Thanks for coming over for #IMK x

    • I would love to say Kojiro found the warm spot, as it is near the oven but it was just because I had left it open & there was a space for him to sit Sandra – heeheehee. He’s a funny little fella for sure 🙂 I’m looking forward to seeing the goodies/props you picked up from the op-shops. I love seeing new bargains in everyones kitchens for #IMK too 🙂 See you soon, take care xx

    • Thank you Dee for your lovely anniversary wishes. As for a prop cupboard, I don’t actually have ‘a’ cupboard, they’re stored wherever they fit 😉 One day I’d love a whole room for my food styling/photography and props (I can dream can’t I!?) Lovely seeing you for #IMK xx
