In my Kitchen June 2017

In my Kitchen JUNE2017 | Miss Food Fairy

I look forward to this time of the month, sharing all the amazing produce & kitchen goodies over this past month. Above is not a very good photo of my boy, Kojiro (koh-jeer-oh) sitting looking like the king of the jungle that he is, on the cookbooks I keep forgetting to post. Mr Hong by Dan Hong who is on The Chef’s Line; Yarra Valley & The Dandenongs paddock to plate and The Gourmet Farmer goes fishing by Matthew Evans & co. I haven’t cooked anything from them yet but they’re great inspiration to have on hand anyway.

I needed new tongs and I have a soft spot for the silicone ones as they don’t scratch any of the pans I use. These were $3 or $3.50 at Target.

You know I love my spicy, hot sauces so when I saw some Tabasco sauce with chipotle I knew I had to have some. It adds a smoky kick to any breakfast dish or stews.

I found some birds eye chilli sauce at South Melbourne Market, which had to come home with me. My husband says it’s not overly hot but I found it had quite a kick when I enjoyed it with my potstickers.

Otway Pork now have English pork sausages, which you can get from selected Woolworths stores. They are the best pork sausages I’ve tried. They were amazing as my curried sausages!

I couldn’t be bothered going the Queen Vic Markets one week to get my eggs, so with The Choice CluckAR app, I can now scan supermarket eggs to tell me if they’re ‘true’ free range or not. The app gives a rating and shows how many hens per hectare. Josh’s Rainbow eggs were the best on Coles shelves. They were quite good eggs for supermarket eggs. Check out the app, which can be downloaded for android or apple phones. It will save a lot of heartache when trying to figure out which eggs are best.

More hot sauces, which we needed to try right away, hence the opened bottles. Otway Preserves Tomato & Chilli sauce and The Chilli Crew’s Original Hot sauce, found at The Farmers Place, which is a little working farm, café and market place on the Anglesea Rd, Freshwater Creek, just outside of Geelong.  They sell their own produce, support local farmers in the area and cook food using this produce. We didn’t eat there but I’d love to spend some time having lunch there when the weather gets warmer.

And lastly, here’s some low fat goodies for me to enjoy to help with my high cholesterol issues. My favourite is the baby bocconcini, which has 1 gram fat per 5 bocconcinis! Most bocconcini or mozzarella can be quite high in fat and I was super excited to see these little morsels of goodness. As a replacement for parmesan, they melt really well on my Bolognese 🙂 The Philly extra light only has 1.2 grams fat per serve and these flavours of Chobani yoghurt have roughly .35 grams fat per container. I’m trying light food to lower cholesterol as my doctor says eating less cheese, full cream milk, eggs, ice cream & yoghurt (all my favourites!) can keeps levels high. Not that I eat a lot of full cream anyway but I’m a bit partial to cheesy goodness 😉

  3. Puss looks like a soulmate monopolising the cookbooks or is that his way of getting you attention? I must check out Matthew Evans’ new book. I need new tongs, off to target with me…

    • If you can’t find any tongs at Target Sandra, let me know & I’ll get some for you and send them up 🙂 Kojiro was just wanting attention 😉 He knew I was trying to take photos of the cookbooks so decided he would sit on them as then I’m indirectly paying him attention hahaha! I still haven’t yet had a chance to read through the cookbooks seen there, I just better grab them incase they go. Lovely seeing you for #IMK xx

  4. Your kitty is definitely asserting dominance, he is gorgeous. You have a lot of wonderful things this month. The pasties look delicious, ditto all the different chilis. I don’t think you can ever have too many pairs of tongs, they are some of my most used utensils.

    • Thank you Liz for your kind words. Kojiro is the cat of the house for sure and he knows it too! Tongs come in handy for so many dishes, they’re always being replaced with new ones & when I see them, especially that cheap, I’ll buy a couple. It’s great seeing you for #IMK xx

  5. Ah yes, the hot sauce. I’m with you there! They are hard to resist. Those bulgogi pasties look great. I bought a Korean cookbook in my travel and have just been reading it tonight. Divine inspiration. What a delightful photo of Kojiro.

    Thanks for the tour. xxx

    • Thanks Sherry. Chllies are a very big pantry staple of mine too. There’s a hug container of dried whole chillies, jars of crushed chilli flakes as well as an abundance of sauces! We just love them! Kojiro is a bit of a rock star in our house, he loves helping in the kitchen. Ragdolls help with everything! Love having you here for #IMK xx
