In my Kitchen October 2017

September flew by so fast that I can’t remember too much of it! I must be getting old! Maybe it was writer’s block or possibly having computer issues which made me think about nothing else for a while. I feel better this week and have plenty of recipes to share so I should be back on track this month! The first week of school holidays I took the boys (nephews) to Healesville Sanctuary (you can see some great videos and photos on Instagram) but here’s one of many favourite shots (above) from the day – a red-tailed black cockatoo.

Loving these gorgeous orange flowers I found at a block of units that is going to be redeveloped down the street from my place. I have no idea what they are, do you know? I think before they start demolishing I will go back to get a plant or two.

Thai Massaman curry paste that I found at a local Asian grocer. I thought about making it from scratch but found this tastes exactly like the Massaman curries we had in Thailand on our holiday. This Mae Ploy Massaman curry paste was a great find at a very good price. And there’s no MSG!! For the win! πŸ™‚

This delicate, soft fleshed 700 gram slab of venison. My sister’s co-worker gave her & myself some to try, saying “I can’t wait to see what your sister makes with this!” Challenge accepted! I have never eaten venison before let alone cook with it so research I did. All I knew about venison was it takes on the flavour of whatever you cook it with so make sure you cook venison with something you love. A recipe will be up soon for the most amazing, melt in your mouth, flavourful, delicious venison there ever was πŸ˜‰

La EspaΓ±ola olive oil is a Spanish olive oil but has been in Australia for over 30 years. I buy a 4 litre tin to always have it on hand. After researching a few olive oils that are sold on our supermarket shelves, I found that there are olive oils that aren’t olive oils – these are no good for our bodies. I found this is the perfect olive oil as it’s light in flavour so is great for all uses – frying, salad dressings, baking and condiments.

And last but always never least, my new potato masher. My metal one broke so this was a great replacement. It’s holes are smaller than my other plastic masher which is making my mashed potato ever so smooth πŸ™‚

    • Those curry pastes are fantastic Kari. They last in the fridge for a good couple of months and taste amazing, like I was in Thailand! Glad you could come past for #IMK πŸ™‚ xx

  6. The orange flowers are blooming lovely. I have used that brand of curry paste before, it must be the red one as it was suitable for vegetarians, I don’t think the Thai green one is. Love the picture on the olive oil tin too. I so agree with you that September has flown by, let us hope that October lingers a longer

    That cockatoo is gorgeous and nice to have a peek into your kitchen too! I would really like that sort of potato masher as well. I have one of those metal things at the moment, and yes, the results are more lumpy. I need to keep looking. πŸ™‚

  8. Nicole, I wish I could help you out with the name of those flowers, but I’m so not a horticulturist. (I like looking at them though!) Sometimes “not knowing” is half the fun… I often gaze at the night sky thinking “I really should learn the names of the constellations”, but I keep putting it off. There are so many beautiful things to see, whether we’re informed or not!

    One of my kids’ favorite meals was venison and the only hint I can offer is to trim every bit of “silver skin” before you cook it. (It contributes to that “gamey” taste.) Loved your olive oil and new potato masher, too!

    • I wish I was a gardener too Kim. I know a lot of our fellow IMKers have veggie gardens and know so much about flowers, etc. I love looking and seeing flowers in my kitchen, they’re all so pretty πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for coming over for #IMK, love having you here xx


  9. That’s a beautiful retro-themed olive oil can! I think Spanish olive oil is very high in quality — at least the versions that are marketed here in the US.

    • I agree Mae, Spanish olive oil is some of the best. I love too that I buy that big tin for around $25 for 4 litres – it’s way more cost efficient than buying smaller bottles. Great seeing you for #IMK Mae xx
