In my Kitchen July 2016

I’m sorry I’ve been a bit non-existent over the past couple of weeks. It’s school holidays here in Melbourne and most of Australia so my eldest nephew, who’s almost nine, came to stay with us last week. We took up our days with a trip to the movies, lunch at Huey’s Diner, martial arts with my husband and a lazy ‘pyjama’ day, playing play station and watching movies – there’s nothing like taking time to recharge the batteries after a big week. I had such a wonderful time getting to know what makes my nephew tick, without school and iPad in the way! Oh, and I’ve also been doing a bit (quite a bit) of recipe research as well as recipe testing – so many recipes in my head but they don’t always turn out perfect the first time!

Above is a photo of Albert Park Lake from our balcony. It reminded of the movie On Golden Pond, with Katherine Hepburn, Henry & Jane Fonda. I just love the way the sun shimmers gold on the water. It took my breath away.

. . . are lots of fresh free range eggs from the Queen Vic Market. I picked up the whole tray for $7.80 – it lasts us a couple of weeks and they taste amazing.

. . . is me with my new driving glasses, what do you think!? A couple of months ago I wondered why, after spending eight hours on the laptop, that I felt extremely tired and words become blurry. I also couldn’t judge distance driving at night. I’ve never had eye troubles before and this was been quite a concern for me so straight to the optometrist the next day to get my eyes tested, where I was diagnosed with astigmatism which means my eyes aren’t circular, they’re move football shaped! So now I need glasses for reading and using my laptop as well as glasses for driving and watching TV, which I now need to wear most of the day. I feel much better now.

. . . are three new (second hand) cookbooks from the op-shop. All three books were $8 the lot. I know they may not be the latest books but I’ve always wanted them in my collection. I haven’t had a chance to start reading them but I can’t wait to try some new recipes.

. . . or more the couch in the loungeroom, is our baby boy, wrapped up in my jumper. The blue just makes his eyes stand out more. He actually let me take a cute photo of him 🙂

. . . is some new funnels from Ikea. I only had one which was doing every job in the kitchen – pouring oil from the 4L tin to my everyday oil bottle and pouring tomato passata into jars. Now I have a couple for each different job.

. . . is a Nowra double camambert cheese. I saw this on another IMK post and as I was born in Nowra, I needed to buy some. Woolies sell it, now I just need a bottle of red to try with it!

And the last item In My Kitchen . . .

IMK #8 MissFoodFairy

. . . is some Bertocchi smoked Australian bacon. I sometimes can’t get to the market to buy my bacon and I decided to give this a try, from Woolies. It’s actually a really tasty bacon and it doesn’t splatter when you fry it.

 Banana bread bakeoff! @MissFoodFairyGoodFood&WineShow 2016 #1 @MissFoodFairy

Oh and just in case you missed it, I’m on a mission to find that perfect slice of banana bread – do you have a family recipe you’d like to share? Share now on my bake off post. And I also went to the Melbourne Good Food & Wine Show – go check it out if you get a chance 🙂

  1. Thanks for linking to my IMK post – that photo of Albert Park lake is gorgeous and a week with your nephew sounds like fun. Toast is a brilliant book – hope you enjoy it. That’s great how you matched the blue jumper to your kitty’s eyes – so adorable. All looks like lots of fun in your kitchen and glad you can read this on your laptop ok now 🙂

  2. Ooh – I love Toast. Have you seen the tele-movie version of it with Helena Bonham Carter? There’s a very short cameo from Nigel at the very end. Seek it out if you haven’t seen it. Beautiful photo at the top too. It’s not always about the kitchen (just mostly).

  5. It sounds like you had a lovely time with your nephew. And your cat!! We had one just like him when I was growing up – ours was a seal point Birman, is it the same breed?

    • Thank you Kari, Kojiro (his name) is a seal point ragdoll. He’s 5.6kgs and 16 months old. We’ve had him since he was 10 weeks old and he brings so much laughter to our house x
