IMK

In my Kitchen July 2015

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue is the theme for the goodies in my kitchen this month. This saying is usually used for good luck for the bride on her wedding day – hope it gives me good luck cooking in my kitchen this month!

In my Kitchen is something old and something borrowed (above) – my sister’s new plate, which was handed down from my nanna. This plate has been around for as long as I can remember – I think we used to have freshly baked scones served on this when we were younger. My sister let me borrow this so I could use it for photography with my food – I will look after it with delicate hands, I promise. It says it’s made in Japan but doesn’t have a date on it – maybe I should take it to the Antiques Roadshow to be appraised (my husband would love that).

In my Kitchen is hosted by Celia at Fig Jam & Lime Cordial, where we share all the goodies in and around our kitchens – we’re all foodies who love finding new inspiration from all over the world. Come join us by the 10th of every month – we’d love to see the goodies in your kitchen!

My new sous chef Kojiro #IMK @MissFoodFairy

. . . something new – my sous chef! His name is Kojiro, he’s a chocolate point ragdoll and he loves helping me in the kitchen. I have to be careful when frying food as I don’t want the oil to splatter on him! At the time of this photo he was about 12 weeks old.

New cookbooks #IMK @MissFoodFairy

. . . something new – cookbooks! More amazing inspiration to add to my growing cookbook collection. Starting from the bottom – Instant Entertaining by Donna Hay (which I picked up from an op-shop) shares’ some amazing dinner tips, whether it’s a 3 or 4 course meals for the family dinner or entertaining guests with a dinner party to setting tables. There’s great canapés in there for me to try. Zenbu Zen (Everything is Zen) by Jane Lawson takes us on a journey through Japanese food, culture and artistic insight. I look forward to this reading & being inspired by this cookbook as I just love all Asian cuisine but have never really tried cooking Japanese. The River Cottage Australia cookbook by Paul West is from the first series of River Cottage Australia. Everything is cooked using what is grown or produced from their farm – paddock to plate, allowing the food to speak for itself without overcomplicating flavours. Nigella Express & Nigellisma by Nigella Lawson were two cookbooks that I was yet to have in my collection by this gorgeous cook. Nigellisma is Italian cuisine that’s fresh, tasty and unpretentious. Nigella Express is all about eating well when time is short. I’m excited to get my creative juices flowing with these wonderful cookbooks.

New Indian serving bowls #IMK @MissFoodFairy

. . . something new – Indian dishes. My sister bought me the two in the background and the ones with copper bases came from K-Mart at a bargain price of $2 each! I don’t have silver Indian-inspired serving dishes for my photographs so I’m a bit excited to use them – my copper serving bowls have had so much use so I’m sure these will be used to death as well!

. . . something blue – these beautiful patterned drinking glasses (there’s four in total). I bought my sister some purple ones too and they came from Aldi last month.

New & old glasses #IMK @MissFoodFairy

. . . something old and something new – 2 styles of red wine glasses and Krosno martini glasses. To me they’re all new and I’m so excited to have them in my kitchen! The red wine glasses bring back memories of when I was younger and my nan filled them with either with sherry or ginger wine – I thought they looked so elegant and sophisticated. I thought they had gone with the wind when my nan moved years ago! To know my nan still had them and handed them down to me, being the oldest grandchild, I am the happiest girl in town! I do remember them being bigger when I was younger 😉 The Krosno martini glasses I found at an op-shop for $1 each! Bargain!

New baking trays #IMK @MissFoodFairy

. . . something new – baking trays. Well actually, I’m using them for freezing the ice cream I hope to make soon. I’ve never made ice cream from scratch, apart from school, so I’m a bit nervous but if I start with a simple flavour I’m sure I’ll be hooked!

And last but now least In my Kitchen is . . .

Jarrahdale pumpkin & soup #IMK @MissFoodFairy

. . . something new – a 5kg Jarrahdale pumpkin, which has given me the inspiration to try other dishes not just pumpkin soup. But in case you missed it, here’s my Roast pumpkin soup with bacon croutons to get right into pumpkin fever. I’ve got a couple of pumpkin recipes to come so please stay tuned.

Coming soon to Miss Food Fairy – I’ve been working on a new Miss Food Fairy logo, new website and a podcast. Looking forward to sharing with you lots of exciting times ahead on Miss Food Fairy.

  1. It all looks so wonderful. I love the wine glasses as well as the blue glasses. That is quite a pumpkin. We’ve had one so far this year, I’m hoping for more. If so I roast it, purée and freeze it. Then I can enjoy pumpkin goodness all year!

    • Tandy, the rack was a gift from my sister who found it didn’t work in her kitchen – it’s just the perfect fit for my glasses, isn’t it! I will keep you up-to-date with my sous chef & his antics for sure. Lovely having you here x

  3. I love the plate! And those Indian dishes are fabulous – I nearly bought some a few weeks ago but they were super-expensive so I resisted. I love all your beautiful glassware, particularly the red glasses. It sounds like you have a lot of fabulousness coming up on your blog xx

    • So many exciting things happening for Miss Food Fairy Charlie. My new logo is ready to go while the new look blog layout is still being worked on but it’s all very exciting. I was just watching Rick Stein’s India & saw some amazing Indian dishes he was using – one day, one day 😉 xx

  4. ooh i love the baking trays! they are crazy expensive over here for some reason! I’m looking forward to pumpkin season too, pumpkin is only available here at one time of year and this year I will be bulking it in bulk, pureeing and freezing it!

    • Great idea Cate with pureeing & freezing the pumpkin – I do that with my soup all the time! It’s great for when you feel like pumpkin but it isn’t available and it can easily be used in most recipes. Heading over to see your #IMK now 🙂

  5. Hi Nicole, it looks like someone has been nibbling at your pumpkin. What is it???? Those Indian dishes for $2.00 are a real bargain. I am so jealous.

  6. I absolutely love everything in your kitchen BUT your kitty is definitely the winner for me! My 3 would be super jealous if I had to introduce another baby although given half the chance I would love to – my husband, not so much!

    • Thank you Emily for your lovely words about Kojiro – he can be a bit cheeky being a kitten but your right, those blue eyes get me all the time! Thank you too for letting me know the name of my new dishes – I never knew that. So I can cook them on the gas stovetop too? I’m still working on some fine details for the new look but it shouldn’t be too far away. Lovely seeing you Emily, have a great month x

      • Yes, You can cook with them over gas they’re great for stir fries and quick curries! Just make sure you use a burner that fits the pan and don’t use extremely high heat. FYI…use an oven mitt to touch the handles because they get super hot even on a low gas setting, I learned that the hard way. I’m also working on a blog revamp, making design choices gets to be so difficult. All the best! 🙂

      • Thank you Emily for all these wonderful tips & don’t worry, I learnt my lesson while at cooking school regarding mitts & hot handles – I burnt my palm from grabbing a straight-out-of-the-oven pan with my bare hands! Good luck with your blog revamp – will be checking 🙂 Take care x
